How OpenClaw (9K stars day one) and Instinct ($10B, 14 employees) defined personal agents

Part 8 of a series on who defines personal AI agents: open-source projects and startups without platform baggage. Two telling numbers: Clawdbot (renamed OpenClaw, lobster icon) hit 9,000 GitHub stars on day one in January 2026; and startup Instinct closed a $1B Series C at a $10B valuation with just 14 employees and a closed beta. The piece traces how Big Tech borrowed from them: Meta's Muse reportedly modeled on OpenClaw, creator Peter Steinberger joined OpenAI in February before OpenAI shipped dots, Google's Gemini Spark was called "Google's OpenClaw", Xiaomi's Miloco 2.0 integrated OpenClaw, Lenovo upgraded Tianxi to "Tianxi Claw", and Microsoft's enterprise Agent Autopilot was reported as built on OpenClaw (or at least architecturally similar). A hobby project shaping major vendors' products within nine months is rare in consumer tech.
