GitHub Copilot SDK renamed Microsoft Copilot SDK after reaching millions of users in under a year

Microsoft announced that the GitHub Copilot SDK is being renamed to Microsoft Copilot SDK, reflecting broad adoption across Microsoft and GitHub products — from a small technical preview to millions of users in under 12 months.
The substantive change: the SDK goes from being the programmatic interface for the GitHub Copilot harness to the interface for the Microsoft Copilot harness, the shared agent foundation used across Microsoft and GitHub products. Developers can build and customize agent experiences on the same core foundation powering Microsoft's own products, while retaining control over prompts, tools, policies, and app experiences.
- The SDK repository has moved to the Microsoft org; branding and docs updates will roll out in phases
- Existing package names and namespaces may reference the old name during the transition
- No immediate changes required for existing users; support channels unchanged
