mcp-coatcheck: A Proxy That Runs Slow MCP Tool Calls in the Background to Avoid Timeouts
Awacer · reddit · 2026-10-29
A Reddit user released mcp-coatcheck, an open-source proxy that solves the problem of agents calling slow MCP tools (test suites, crawls, evals) hitting client timeouts or blocking the whole turn.
- Sits in front of any stdio MCP server with no changes needed: npx mcp-coatcheck -- <your server command>
- Calls running longer than a few seconds return a ticket the agent collects later; Tasks-capable clients get real MCP Tasks, others get a job id plus a fetch tool
- Fast calls pass straight through; zero dependencies
- Tested with Claude Code and mcpc; Codex and Cursor not yet verified
Context: MCP's Tasks spec exists for exactly this, but almost no servers implement it yet — this proxy fills that gap.
