Anthropic's Claude for Scientists plan auto-rejects a real PI, sparking verification complaints

Anthropic launched a discounted Claude Team plan for scientists: PIs at accredited universities and nonprofits get a reduced rate and can add postdocs, grad students, and researchers after verification. The plan pitches a science workbench — hypothesis generation and testing, code, analyses scaling from laptop to hundreds of GPUs, cited sources and shown math — with use cases spanning astrophysics, biology (scRNA, WGS, ATAC, MS-Spec pipelines), retrosynthesis planning, and quantum circuit optimization.
But UMD NLP researcher Sarah Wiegreffe tweeted for help: her application was auto-rejected even after submitting her institutional faculty page as PI verification. Screenshots show the rejection advises using an institutional email and linking a faculty page — suggesting the automated eligibility check is misfiring on legitimate PIs.
