OpenAI's new math results accused of scooping community mathematician's Yang-Mills work
burny_tech · x · 2026-10-27
Mathematician alpoge says Ethan Sussman had been publicly writing up existence of YM4 via Balaban's approach, posting QED3 and YM3 proofs in his repo with community collaborators — and that OpenAI, instead of contacting him, announced results noting "as a subproblem, this work also includes a proof of the existence of pure Yang–Mills theory," part of the Clay Millennium Prize problem. The thread raises a live controversy over credit and community collaboration.
