Anthropic lets Claude run alignment research autonomously in weak-to-strong supervision study
burny_tech · x · 2026-10-27
Anthropic's Fellows program published "Automated Alignment Researchers," exploring whether LLMs can scale scalable oversight via weak-to-strong supervision: a weaker model fine-tunes a stronger base model by demonstrating ideal outputs. To avoid identical ideas, each AAR got a slightly different, deliberately ambiguous starting hint (interpretability tools, data reweighting, etc.), then independently proposed ideas, ran experiments, and shared findings and code with each other. Motivation: frontier models already help build their successors, and oversight must move from theory to practice as models generate code humans can no longer parse.
