Codex CLI's cyberpunk voice-token animation is just a split-flap airport board
arthurcolle · x · 2026-10-26
A breakdown of Codex CLI's flashy voice-token animation: under the hood it's a SplitFlapTranscriptCell — an airport departure-board effect. Realtime transcript deltas render through split-flap cells updating every 45ms; each new tile cycles deterministically through letters sampled from the transcript and settles after 180ms, staggered by 8ms for a left-to-right deciphering look. User text glows cyan, assistant text magenta; the full window caps at 675ms and reduced-motion mode bypasses it. The fake ciphertext comes from (targetcharacter + tileindex × 7 + frame × 11) mod samplelength.
