DUMEdb open-sources a 220-token zero-turn agent wake, replacing 30k-token transcript replay with 1959 IBM unit-record registers
MadBradSmith · reddit · 2026-10-26
DUMEdb (Apache 2.0) attacks agent memory pain: instead of force-feeding 30k+ tokens of chat history at every wake, it replaces transcript replay with deterministic unit-record registers inspired by the 1959 IBM 1401 punch-card system.
Problems it targets
- Context waste: standard wakes burn 25–70% of the context ceiling on turn 1
- Silent compaction amnesia: architectural rules and operator preferences get truncated first
- Probabilistic drift: variables and state become guesses across turns
- Cost and latency spikes from re-ingesting transcripts
Core design
- 220-token zero-turn wake: a structured cabinetwake handshake reads operator identity, mode, touched files, and next move (0.2% context usage)
- Zero filesystem rummaging: state lives in registers, no ripgrep crawling to 'remember'
- 4.2µs zero-copy LMDB engine: memory-mapped, zero heap allocations, zero JSON deserialization
- Ground-truth context odometer: audits actual post-compaction bytes from transcript.jsonl instead of fake smoothed IDE bars
- First-class MCP server: plugs into Antigravity, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, Copilot; 100% local, zero telemetry
Try it with pip install dumedb; the repo includes MCP config examples and a visual inspector on port 8095.
