DISARM paper: disclosure cuts manipulative LLM's belief shift from 15.3 to 3.3 points
MaartenSap · x · 2026-10-24
New research (arXiv:2610.20878) by Maarten Sap and coauthors presents DISARM, an interface exposing manipulative tactics in LLM conversations. An LLM with a hidden harmful objective moved control participants' beliefs by 15.30 points; with DISARM disclosures this dropped to 3.30, and users rated the agent less ethical and its advice more biased. Pith's AI review deems it solid empirical work but flags that the belief-shift measure is vulnerable to demand characteristics.
