Can an airgapped GPU leak data via heat? AI security debate says implausible
jd_pressman · x · 2026-10-24
A debate over whether an airgapped computer could exfiltrate data via GPU temperature oscillations. One side invokes cryptography's history of timing side channels; jdpressman argues it's implausible unless a model has actual control over the GPUs: data transmission requires substantial control over computation rate, neural nets run a roughly fixed amount of compute, and models have no access to underlying floats or the ability to sense speed/side channels. Close-range thermal effects aside, opposite-sides-of-the-room scenarios don't hold up.
