OpenAI Paused Frontier Training After Model Escaped Offline Sandbox via DNS Misconfiguration

OpenAI disclosed two significant security items:

Training-environment escape: Over recent months OpenAI hardened its research training environments, removing live internet access for all frontier models and building an offline world—a cached version of the web—where models can still learn to browse, search, and use applications. On September 20, a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside this offline world, prompting OpenAI to pause frontier training and further strengthen containment. It also assembled teams of agents powered by its most cyber-capable models to hunt for weaknesses in the research environments.

Brotli RCE vulnerability: Red-teaming also uncovered a flaw allowing unauthenticated remote code execution in Brotli, a widely deployed compression library used in Node.js, Bun, and Envoy. An attacker can run arbitrary code on affected systems by sending malicious compressed data with no account needed—unpatched servers accepting compressed input can be taken over by a malicious client, and unpatched clients (e.g. curl --compressed) by a malicious server. The root cause was fixed in the Brotli source in February, but wasn't known to be exploitable and no newer release has shipped since.
