Auth0 architect's guide: one identity layer to secure the four channels of agentic commerce
yenkel · x · 2026-10-23
Auth0 Chief Product Architect Sandrino Di Mattia published a long piece, "Securing the Front Door of Agentic Commerce," on identity and security when AI agents shop on behalf of users — what he calls the biggest shift in customer identity since mobile.
Core thesis: commerce is moving from "bring people to your site and convert them" to "agents discover, compare, and buy without ever loading your homepage." The article maps four emerging channels of agentic commerce (first-party embedded agents among them), each with a different owner, protocol, and trust model — brands will likely need presence in all of them.
The security questions are universal: who is the agent, which customer it represents, and what actions/spending limits it's authorized for. The piece argues for a single identity layer built on open standards like Poppy and OAuth, and explains how UCP and the Personal Agent Protocol fit in.
