AWS shows how to cut agent costs with local SLMs routing to Bedrock only when needed
AWS ML Blog · rss · 2026-10-22
The AWS ML Blog details the Adaptive Agentic Intelligence Framework (AAIF), built on Strands Agents, which avoids routing every request to an expensive frontier model. It cites NVIDIA research arguing small language models are "sufficiently powerful, inherently more suitable, and necessarily more economical" for many agentic invocations.
Three-layer architecture:
- Smart orchestration: llama3.2:1b acts as a lightweight router that classifies requests with no hardcoded rules.
- Local processing: SLMs via Ollama handle routine tasks (telemetry retrieval, image analysis) with low latency and no cloud dependency — sensitive camera feeds never leave the device.
- Cloud processing: complex pattern analysis and strategic recommendations go to frontier models on Amazon Bedrock.
A full IoT monitoring reference implementation with code is provided (@tool decorators, OllamaModel orchestrator config), deployable on an 8GB Raspberry Pi, fully in-cloud, or hybrid.
