SemiAnalysis: 1,730 solar pullers yield ~30 GWp, only 4-7 GW of firm datacenter power
BenBajarin · x · 2026-10-21
Ben Bajarin reshares SemiAnalysis math on the solar supply chain: at 11-15 MW/yr per silicon puller (per Soochow '23, Linton prospectus, ESIA '24 benchmarks), 1,730 pullers imply 20-25 GWp/yr — and since benchmarks are 3 years old and new units cost 50% more, 30 GWp is plausible.
At a 20-23% capacity factor with storage and backup, that yields 4-7 GW of firm power (35-60 TWh/yr). Bajarin adds that 20-30 GWp needs roughly 22,500-33,700 acres of panels before spacing and access roads. The takeaway: solar buildout for AI datacenters carries major scale and land constraints.
