Uber's AI System AutoClean Deleted 1M+ Lines of Dead Code Across 16,000 Stale Feature Flags

Uber Engineering unveiled AutoClean, an AI-powered system that combines AI agents, deterministic code transformations, and validation to clean up technical debt. It has removed 16,000+ stale feature flags — over 1 million lines of dead code.
Feature flags are central to how Uber ships software (gradual rollouts, experiments, fast rollbacks), but stale ones accumulate into major tech debt. AutoClean uses agents to identify and safely excise that legacy code.
