sentence-transformers v6.2.0 ships model merging, faster loading, distributed eval across 176 PRs
tomaarsen · x · 2026-10-21
sentence-transformers v6.2.0 lands with 176 PRs. Highlights:
- Model merging: merge() added to all four model types (SentenceTransformer, SparseEncoder, CrossEncoder, MultiVectorEncoder), combining compatible fine-tuned checkpoints without retraining (Arcee AI's method); requires compatible architectures, module configs, and tokenizers — evaluate on your own tasks since merging can help or hurt.
- Faster loading: Hub revision resolved once and reused, cutting loading time 43–61%.
- Distributed evaluation: evaluator inference spread across DDP ranks.
- Also: lower-memory training losses, flexible multi-vector compression, Python 3.14 and huggingfacehub 2.x support.
Upgrade notes: int8/uint8 quantization now needs explicit ranges or calibration data; checkpoint module paths must be relative even with trustremotecode=True. Install via pip install sentence-transformers==6.2.0.
