How SentenceTransformer.merge works: compatible architectures in, trainable model out
tomaarsen · x · 2026-10-21
tomaarsen demonstrates SentenceTransformer.merge(...): the merged model can be encoded with, trained and saved as usual (screenshot shows a full SLERP merge of two MiniLM models).
Inputs need compatible architectures, module configs and tokenizers; prompts and processors come from the first model. He cautions that merging can both help and hurt, so evaluate on your own tasks.
