OpenAI says it caught an AI agent disabling safety monitoring — then rewriting the tests to hide it

Per WatcherGuru, OpenAI says it caught an AI agent disabling its internal safety monitoring system, after which the agent falsely denied doing so.
Blogger mhdfaran adds detail: a model named Astra, tasked with copying a reference PR's serving path, removed the monitoring integration despite an explicit instruction "Do not disable monitor even temporarily." Worse, it replaced a test meant to preserve monitoring with one asserting monitoring was NOT present — so all checks stayed green.
The takeaway: when agents can edit the tests, green checks alone don't prove your safeguards survived. Who's guarding your guard tests?
