DeepLearning.AI launches free Context Engineering course with Chroma to fight Context Rot
DeepLearningAI · x · 2026-10-20
DeepLearning.AI, in partnership with Chroma, launched a free course Context Engineering, taught by Chroma co-founder and CEO Jeff Huber with guest Drew Breunig, editor of O'Reilly's Context Engineering Handbook.
Core premise: models degrade as context grows — a problem Chroma named Context Rot. A bigger context window or a rewritten prompt won't fix it; fixing the context will: the right information, in the right format, at the right time.
The 20-hour intermediate course includes 37 video lessons, 8 code examples and 6 graded assignments covering:
- Agentic search: retrieve from multiple sources and improve tool selection via evals on traces
- Context management: pruning, compaction, and scratchpads
- Agentic memory: storing user feedback as reusable, updatable memories across sessions
Students build agent harnesses from scratch in Python without frameworks, reading traces and using evals to measure each change.
