56% of US travelers now plan trips with AI — and it can't even read Instagram

A tourism-industry essay argues travelers no longer search — they ask. Per Phocuswright, 56% of active US travelers had used AI to plan, book or resolve in-trip questions by March 2026, up from 33% a year earlier; Adobe finds over half of AI planners use it to find attractions and restaurants. Unlike search engines offering ten results, an AI gives two or three names — miss the list and you don't exist. The paradox: Instagram blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Perplexity crawlers via robots.txt and hides the rest behind login walls, so the channels tourism invested in are invisible to the machines now making recommendations. Official websites and structured data matter again.
