Tsinghua and Z.AI study shows image-generation training expands unified multimodal models' knowledge
zai-org · hf · 2026-10-19
Can learning to draw something make a model understand it better? A Tsinghua University and Z.AI team ran controlled studies showing that visual image-generation training does expand pretrained unified multimodal models' knowledge: facts learned through image generation transfer to text-only question answering, though text access remains harder than visual recall.
Alignment techniques further improve text-based access to visually acquired information, suggesting generation and understanding can reinforce each other.
