Dev rebuilds 2000 RTS Tzar from disassembly with Claude Code in Rust, open source
ColCarlo99 · reddit · 2026-10-18
A developer used Claude Code to rebuild Tzar: The Burden of the Crown (2000) from scratch in Rust + Bevy. The open-source project ReTzar plays original campaigns and random maps on Windows 10/11 up to 4K (needs a copy of the original game).
Workflow highlights:
- Claude reads the disassembly of the original exe and ports one system at a time: combat, AI, map generator, mission scripts
- The author plays alongside the original and reports off-feeling behavior; Claude traces it back to the original code
- 600+ tests and memory notes between sessions keep the long-running work from drifting
