ByteDance's Athanor: autonomous agents post-train a small model to match its official tuned version
Yufa Zhou · hf · 2026-10-16
ByteDance, with Duke and University of Chicago, released Athanor, an open agent-native system for autonomous post-training research (AutoPostTrain).
- Studies a measurable, weaker form of recursive self-improvement: frontier agents post-training a small raw base model with public data on real GPUs
- Agents get full research autonomy, low-friction engineering tools, and efficient starter code: they read datasets and evaluation results, build training data, write and modify training algorithms, and tune hyperparameters
- The resulting model matches or exceeds the base model's official instruction-tuned version
An early empirical step toward recursive self-improvement.
