SpecAgent: small model drafts tool calls, large model verifies in parallel to cut latency
Zilin Wang · hf · 2026-10-16
Researchers from LARK Lab (HKUST-GZ), Yinwang and Cambridge propose SpecAgent, a collaboration protocol that turns the strong model from the author of every agent step into a reviewer of steps drafted by a weak model.
- Unlike routers, collaborative agents and step-level speculation that keep the strong model as generator, the weak model executes read-only tool calls while drafting, grounding every step in real observations.
- The strong model verifies trajectory-level drafts in parallel, reducing latency and memory use while preserving task quality.
- Code is open-sourced at LARK-AI-Lab/SpecAgent.
