After training ~1,700 models, researchers cut diffusion LLM pre-training compute gap to 3-8x and boost efficiency 4x

- Diffusion language models (DLMs) have long been considered inefficient to pre-train, with a common claim that they need 16x the compute of autoregressive models to reach the same likelihood.
- Revisiting this with roughly 1,700 models, researchers found the gap under current DLM practice is only 3-8x, not 16x.
- The key idea of the new work: train and evaluate dLLMs the way they are actually used — replacing full-sequence masked likelihood with block diffusion in an encoder-decoder architecture, using the exact sampler run at inference time. This makes pre-training up to 4x more efficient.
