Cornell-Amazon Study Cuts Diffusion LM Compute Gap from 16x to 3-8x

A Cornell and Amazon research team (Kuleshov et al.) has published "Revisiting the 16x Pretraining Compute Gap between Diffusion and Autoregressive Language Models" (arXiv:2610.17590), overturning the industry consensus that diffusion language models (DLMs) need 16x the training compute of autoregressive models to reach equivalent likelihood. When measured according to how DLMs are actually deployed today, the gap is only 3-8x. This revision substantially improves the pretraining efficiency picture for diffusion LMs and warrants a re-evaluation by anyone following the architecture.
