The University of Pittsburgh's Ishihara Lab was selected for Google.org's Impact Challenge: AI for Science, receiving $2.25M — one of 17 organizations sharing $36M from 3,000+ applicants across 30 countries.
Working with Harvard's Melanie Weber and Yale's Hattie Chung, the lab pairs geometric AI with human cardiac organoids in a "lab-in-the-loop" approach: AI compares 2.7M+ single-cell profiles across species to find regulatory genes that regenerative species have and humans lack, then validates predictions via large-scale genetic screens in injured organoids — aiming to unlock human heart regeneration.
