Unitree CEO cuts robot 'ChatGPT moment' timeline to 1-2 years, citing GPT-6 Astra

Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing said at an industry event in Shanghai that GPT-6 Astra has moved his estimate for robotics' "ChatGPT moment" to within one or two years — down from 2-3 years (best case) to a decade as of August. His threshold: robots completing 80% of tasks in 80% of unfamiliar environments via voice or text commands.
Independent tests on YAM robot arms with zero robot-specific training show a split picture: 19/20 success dropping blocks into a bowl, but just 2/20 placing puzzle pieces into slots — rough pick-and-place is basically solved, precision contact work is not. Wang sees actuators, reducers and dexterous hands as the winners, and pressure mounting on robot-specific model startups. Source: SCMP.
