Parkinson's patients embraced DBS without knowing how it works — a lesson for AI-designed drugs
ShahabBakht · x · 2026-10-12
Responding to a French post saying he'd take any AI-designed molecule that passes phase 3 trials regardless of whether doctors understand the mechanism, ShahabBakht shares his observation from a deep brain stimulation (DBS) research project:
- Patients, doctors, and even researchers didn't fully understand how DBS worked
- Patients were still happy with the treatment and volunteered for experiments to help uncover the mechanism
The takeaway: efficacy-first, mechanism-later is how the public genuinely accepts AI-designed therapies — being cured matters more than explainability.
