Compliant spined footpad tackles the one-shot landing problem of hoppers

Monopedal hoppers get one chance per landing — a single contact point determines the whole body state. New work in Advanced Intelligent Systems attacks the problem with hardware rather than controllers: a planar footpad on a compliant spherical joint with embedded spines, letting the pad self-align and grip uncooperative terrain while the leg keeps its own axis.
