Temporal runs the Pi coding agent on durable execution to survive machine failures
francesc · x · 2026-10-09
Temporal open-sourced pi-temporal, letting Earendil's Pi coding agent recover when a machine dies mid-turn.
- Pi tasks run on a fleet of Temporal Workers; if a machine fails during a turn, another Worker takes over without re-running the interrupted tool call
- The design mirrors Pi Durable's patterns: checkpointing before steps, request-ID dedup for submissions, an "effect sandwich" that records intent before external effects, and Memos to reuse values on retry
- The authors note a broader trend: agent harnesses keep converging on Durable Execution as they solve failure modes
- Caveat: turns in the terminal UI still run in your local pi process and need a reopen to recover
