Anthropic Startup Program terms criticized: competitive tech rights, safety reviews override ZDR
DominiqueCAPaul · x · 2026-10-07
A close reading of Anthropic's Startup Program official terms surfaced several provisions unfavorable to applicants, all accepted simply by applying:
- §2.4: Anthropic "may develop similar or competitive technology" and may reuse, for any purpose, general ideas, know-how and techniques remembered by personnel who looked at your data
- §D.4: prohibits using their services to build competing products or services
- §F.1: allows Anthropic to retain data and perform safety reviews, superseding ZDR — undermining the zero-data-retention promise
- §6: the addendum can change at any time without notice or liability
- Eligibility excludes companies in China, Russia, Iran, and other jurisdictions
The poster quipped there had to be a catch, and tagged Jason Calacanis asking whether he'd still advise startups to apply.
