Caltech Mathathon challenges teams to use AI to find simpler proofs, Tao advises
thegautamkamath · x · 2026-10-06
Caltech students launched Mathathon, an AI+math competition advised by Terence Tao and Sergei Gukov. Instead of open problems, teams tackle known hard results (four color theorem, ABC conjecture) to produce simpler proofs, better formulations, and connections. Round 1 is a 40-hour onsite event Nov 13-15 at Caltech; Round 2 is two months remote, producing an explainer and a GitHub repo with LLM chat histories. All results will be open-sourced.
