In Claude, where an MCP server is configured decides who sees it
nitayneeman · reddit · 2026-10-05
A detailed breakdown of Claude's four MCP server locations and why visibility follows configuration, not local-vs-remote:
- Account (connector): remote server called from Anthropic's cloud; visible in both Claude app and Claude Code but can't reach your localhost
- Claude Code config (claude mcp add / .mcp.): local stdio or remote URL, but only Claude Code sees it
- Plugins under Customize: chat loads only their remote servers; their stdio servers work only in Claude Code
- Desktop extensions: local servers only the desktop app runs
So a remote server added via claude mcp add --transport http notion ... is still "local" in the sense that matters: the web chat knows nothing about it. Includes an example repo running DBHub against Dockerized Postgres as a read-only user, plus a plugin bundling a remote server with a skill.
