Nurses say HCA's Palantir-built AI scheduling tool is understaffing shifts and putting patient safety at risk

WIRED reports HCA Healthcare, the largest US hospital chain, has rolled out Timpani—an AI scheduling tool co-developed with Palantir—to roughly 130 of its 190 locations since 2023.
- Florida ICU nurse Amber Retzloff requested 50 specific 12-hour shifts over four months; more than half were reassigned, often creating back-to-back-to-back day stretches
- Nurses say the tool operates with minimal oversight, routinely schedules too few nurses or too few veterans (especially Sundays), and ignores stated preferences
- They allege it has left care teams understaffed, imbalanced, and exhausted, potentially harming patients; similar complaints appear on Reddit
