Volantis raises $88M Series A to break the memory wall with photonics
testingcatalog · x · 2026-10-02
- Volantis announced an $88M Series A led by Lachy Groom and Abstract, bringing total funding to $97M. Backers include Sam Altman, Jeff Dean, Dylan Patel, John Doerr, Naveen Rao, Dwarkesh Patel and Sholto Douglas.
- The startup uses photonics to attack the AI inference memory wall, claiming an order-of-magnitude boost in both memory capacity and bandwidth — unlike SRAM (bandwidth-only) or HBM (capacity-only) approaches.
- Claims: support for 10T+ parameter models at up to 10,000 tok/s/user, 10x farther data transmission than same-size electrical wires, and lower $/token via optical memory pooling. Vision: restart scaling laws and let coding agents finish tasks in 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes.
- First customer deliveries of the A-1 system are planned for 2027.
