OpenRouter Batch API spans 71 models, auto-routes to cheapest provider

OpenRouter launched a Batch API aimed at background tasks that benefit from being slower, smarter, and cheaper. Its six claimed advantages:
- Broadest model coverage: 71 models supported so far
- Automatic routing to the cheapest provider for best pricing
- Uniform API formats (/chat/completions, /responses, /messages) across all models
- Better DX for submitting requests and polling full responses, skipping the l files-API dance
- No need to manage files APIs or external buckets
- BYOK works out of the box
Jeff Weinstein frames the thesis: many prompts would be better off running slower, smarter, and cheaper in the background across many models.
