Open models hit record 78.4% of token volume on Vercel AI Gateway; Kimi, DeepSeek, Z.ai spend beats OpenAI

Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch shared that open models may have hit a record share of token volume on Vercel AI Gateway: 78.4% open vs 21.6% closed. Spend tells a different story: #3 and #4 on spend that day were Moonshot AI (Kimi) and DeepSeek, and adding Z.ai, their combined inference spend surpasses OpenAI at #2. Note: that's inference spend across providers (mostly US), not revenue going directly to open-weight labs.
