Azure East US outage knocked ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Copilot offline in 90 minutes

A failure in Azure's East US region on September 3 degraded or took down ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and even Microsoft's own Copilot within roughly 90 minutes, with over 37,000 Downdetector reports for ChatGPT alone (66,000+ combined). Three AI labs that spend billions competing against each other buckled simultaneously because they share the same regional dependency, while Gemini stayed up thanks to Google's vertically integrated stack. The author warns this was just consumer chatbots having a bad morning — extend the same failure to enterprise agents orchestrating procurement and financial operations six months out, and single-region dependencies become a serious architectural risk.
