Steven Johnson: NotebookLM's mobile camera turned my field research photos into 99%-accurate documents

Author and NotebookLM team member Steven Johnson shared how the Gemini Notebook mobile app's camera feature transformed his field research: while working on a project in the Sierras, he photographed everything he saw — including a museum exhibit panel — and asked the app to generate a detailed reference report from the image.
He fact-checked the output himself: about 99% accurate, and the model correctly transcribed text so blurry he could barely read it himself.
His planned workflow: generate such documents for all his photos, then have Notebook flag what's genuinely new versus his existing source knowledge base and what's most relevant to his writing outline. He calls the experience "truly magical."
