Dev builds zero-subscription calorie tracker with Gemini BYOK, no backend needed
bonfiglioalessio · reddit · 2026-11-02
A developer shared Foody Tracker, a local-first Android calorie tracker built on a BYOK (bring your own key) model: instead of charging the $10+/month subscriptions typical of calorie apps to cover cloud AI costs, users plug their free Gemini API key into the app and calls go client-direct to Google AI Studio endpoints.
Gemini is integrated in three ways:
- Multimodal meal parsing: snap a photo of your plate and Gemini detects dishes, estimates portions, and computes macros and total calories;
- Natural language/voice input: messy descriptions like "two scrambled eggs with cheddar and sourdough toast" are structured into JSON for the local diary;
- AI coach: an in-app assistant reviews daily SQLite logs and goals to give meal recommendations.
All health data stays in an on-device SQLite database; stack is React Native (Expo) + TypeScript. The author is soliciting feedback on prompt tuning for vision-based nutrition estimation and edge-case handling with Gemini Flash.
