AI Assistants Remember You, But Nothing Helps You Find What They Told You

The author highlights an overlooked asymmetry: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok all race to remember you, yet almost nothing is built to help you retrieve what they told you.
Key points:
- Two years of chats hold your reasoning — why you picked that vendor, the wording that convinced your boss, the options you ruled out. Shipped docs keep the result; the chat is the only place keeping the reasoning.
- Yet your retrieval tools are auto-generated titles and a search box. Asking the assistant to dig returns a paraphrase, when what you wanted was the exact wording or number.
- The business logic: memory raises switching costs; good search and easy export lower them. One side gets a keynote, the other a settings page.
- The flip comes when AI chats are treated like email — searchable, exportable, subject to retention policy; pressure is already showing in workspaces.
The author discloses his stake: he built AI Toolbox, a browser extension adding full-text search, folders and export to all four chat products.
