Googlers keep saying "prompt volumes": one AI Mode query now spans discovery, research and product attributes

At Google's Retail Rethink 2026 event, multiple Googlers repeatedly used the term "prompt volumes," which the author reads as an agreed-upon comms strategy.
In the live session, Googlers explained it as variations of questions at scale: a single query now often combines product discovery, research, and specific product attributes the user wants — all at once, and happening daily at scale across AI Mode and Gemini. For search and e-commerce folks, the keyword-era mental model is being replaced by complex compound prompts.
