Fruit fly brain fully mapped: 166k neurons, roughly a 1B-parameter SLM
anselm · x · 2026-09-15
- Google Research and HHMI Janelia released the first complete map of the adult male fruit fly brain and central nervous system: about 166,000 neurons and 125 million connections, the largest cellular-level brain map to date.
- The reposter offers an AI perspective, estimating this connectome is roughly equivalent to a 1B-parameter small language model, with a structural comparison to Llama 3.2 1B (16 layers, width 2048, etc.).
