Julian Jacobs' paper "What is Work For? Labor, Politics, and Meaning in the Age of AI" examines the non-monetary benefits work provides—meaning, purpose, community—via an original cross-national survey of 8,234 working-age adults across the UK, US, Denmark, and India.
Key findings: 81% report job satisfaction, majorities in all four countries are strongly motivated by non-monetary aspects, and using an original "Work Values" Index, about one third of working respondents are intrinsically motivated—valuing their role for its own sake—informing debates about AI-driven economic transformation.
