Paper: benchmark difficulty coverage is skewed, leaderboard conclusions need caution
Miserable-Dare5090 · reddit · 2026-10-31
An arXiv paper examines how question difficulty and framing in benchmarks affect observed score improvements during model training. The results show many benchmarks implicitly overweight certain difficulty regions—so their leaderboard conclusions should be interpreted with caution—while others leave substantial portions of the difficulty axis uncovered, limiting their ability to monitor model improvement. A useful methodological caution for anyone judging progress by leaderboards.
