UK MPs and Lords call for new AI law and single statutory oversight body

A cross-party UK Joint Committee on Human Rights published a 100-page report arguing current laws are unfit for AI, citing abuses like non-consensual sexualised images and face scanning. It calls for a single, independent statutory AI oversight body, stricter obligations across the AI lifecycle for high-risk systems, and outright bans on uses like subliminal techniques and inappropriate biometric profiling. Committee chair Alex Sobel said no country has a fit-for-purpose AI regulatory approach.
