Rigged Mesh Can Still Fail in Motion: Lessons from Three Chibi 3D Character Tests
softmarshmallow · reddit · 2026-09-14
The developer of stage-gen, an open-source asset pipeline that turns reference illustrations and briefs into textured, rigged 3D models, shares three chibi-character experiments. Key lesson: a skeleton in the exported file doesn't guarantee good deformation — both characters needed local skin-weight fixes after automatic motion review, and artifacts remain (shoulder/braid stretching, belly/hip folding). They used stock Mixamo Samba motion in Blender to expose issues, and provide a practical inspection step: the bunny-hood character's public GLB contains shoulder, elbow and knee diagnostic poses to check before trusting a rig. Workflow: local CLI + Blender + paid provider keys; outputs are selected examples, not a success-rate benchmark. Guide and examples in the README under "3D SD characters".
