Anthropic has floated having evals organization METR serve as a voluntary third party overseeing its AI systems, and the proposal is drawing pushback.
Critics call the arrangement almost a joke — arguing a voluntary overseer with no binding authority does little to close the gap between voluntary commitments and real external accountability.
