OpenAI chief scientist calls for global AI slowdown: "Time for extreme caution"

OpenAI's chief scientist has publicly called for a global slowdown in AI development in a post on OpenAI's own site ("An Alien Mind"). "The idea of racing forward at all costs seems absurd once one internalizes the seriousness of the stakes," he wrote, adding "It's time for extreme caution."
He urged that international coordination "needs to become a top priority for governments" — one of the strongest risk statements from an OpenAI executive, in sharp contrast with the company's breakneck release pace.
